WHY SCRIMMAGES?....

(Font: Lato Light)  Most drills simulate specific aspects of a game but not the transition between them. They are great for teaching fundamentals but can limit a player’s ability to develop a feel for the flow of the game. It can be particularly difficult for rookies — even though they arguably benefit most from drills

What’s more, drills are often lined up for in a way that only vaguely looks like an on-field scenario — a very specific one at that — making it difficult to integrate what is being taught into a player’s skill set.

Does this justify spending more time scrimmaging? Not really. Scrimmages are often less beneficial to the developing players who need to learn the most. Simply put, players with strong disc skills tend to get more touches in games, limiting the chance for newer players to get reps that they would be forced to take in drills. Focusing on scrimmaging too much can stunt the progress of a young ultimate player.

Benefits of SCRIMMAGE AGAINST VARIOUS LEVELS OF COMPETITION:

  • LOWER COMPETITION - to  Intergrate New plays, Strategies and most importantly, provide the opportunity for less skilled players who don't necessary get the chance to "touch" the ball during regular games.

Comments:

In my experience, another important value of scrimmage is to keep players engaged. A lot of players need it to keep them mentally involved in practice. For college teams developing new players, keeping them playing the game and having fun is a vital part of retention. You have to balance how much you scrimmage because it is fun.

I think this achieves a lot of balance, keeps players engaged, and allows them to focus on applying skills from drills. I think you ALWAYS want to draw focus into your scrimmages into certain elements. Finding ways to do that is hard, but it can help a lot

Ideally, the scrimmage would be as much of a practice as a game with time being taken out for instruction on the spot.

Most of Us focus and talk about : "how it is", talk about our current reality... "Things aren't like they used to be",.. "Things are more complicated",  "The World is not working", "I'm not happy", etc.  The more we're going to Attract those negative thoughts that become these negative feelings.
